Home education has been tremendously healing for Christine’s family. Her sensory overloaded son has found peace and equilibrium. Her fall-through-the cracks son receives the individual instruction he needs. Their family relationships have thrived!
Christine was born and raised in Sherwood Park, Alberta, and attended traditional school from grades K-12. During her CALM 20 job exploration assignment, she declared definitively that she would NOT become a teacher and went on to enrol in the Human Ecology Department at the U of A, earning her degree with a major in Family Studies. The first part-time job she landed upon graduation was…teaching preschool. A lightbulb she didn’t realise was inside of her lit up during that season and four years later she was back at the U of A completing her Bachelor of Education After Degree. She loved teaching first grade in Mundare, Alberta for 6 years before leaving the public school system to raise her family in Edmonton. While her two boys were young, she launched and operated a preschool of her own for seven years.
Because of her positive experience as a student and teacher in the education system, Christine was excited when her oldest son entered kindergarten. He loved it too…for 3 weeks. Then in a burst of tears one night, he declared he didn’t want to go back to school. Ever. The years that followed were a mix of fake stomach aches, resigned submission and exerting the bare minimum effort to get by. In Fall of 2020, they made the jump to home schooling with WISDOM and have not looked back! Flexible home school curriculum and pedagogy paired with the unmatched devotion of a parent as teacher resulted in tremendous gains in academic growth and confidence. She is currently leading her now teenaged boys through their junior and senior high education and has loved how the flexibility of parent led education is helping them thrive in their areas of strength. As a result of the family’s experience, she is passionate about the positive influence of parent directed education and is excited for the opportunity to assist other families during their home school journeys.
